A Eucharist Service at St Margaret’s of Scotland
By Dawn Goodman
Services at St Margaret’s church include singing hymns, reading the Bible, listening as the priest explains those scriptures, praying for the world and our Galiano community, and celebrating the Eucharist (also called communion).
Our music is often led by Ed Norman on the organ, or one of several pianists. Occasionally we have a guitar service, and when children are present, a kids’ song is sung.
St Margaret’s does not currently have a full time priest so we often have visiting clergy from either side of the water, usually three Sundays per month. When a priest is present, the service includes the Eucharist. Otherwise a prayer service is offered featuring a discussion where parishioners share their understanding of the scriptures read that week.
So most Sundays we celebrate the Eucharist. After a time of thoughtful preparation, the priest invites us to participate in a meal of bread and wine that represents the body and blood of Jesus. These elements remind us of Christ’s death, and we each consider our own response to His offer of forgiveness when we are repentant. It is a whole community event with people going forward prayerfully to receive the meal.
Following the service, announcements of upcoming events are shared, and then we listen to one of Ed’s amazing classical organ numbers. Finally, we enjoy a cup of coffee and goodies in the adjacent hall or out on the deck.
You can follow St Margaret of Scotland on Facebook to keep updated on when each clergy is visiting. You are always welcome to join us at 10:30am on Sundays.
